Leica unveils first 35mm Noctilux lens

Leica’s new Noctilux 35mm f/1.2 ASPH

Leica has added a new lens to its prestigious Noctilux range: the Noctilux-M 35mm f/1.2 ASPH. It’s the first time the iconic Noctilux series has been available in a 35mm focal length.

First introduced in 1966, the Noctilux name — derived from the Latin words for “night” and “light” — has long represented the cutting edge of Leica’s lens design. Until now, the range was limited to 50mm and 75mm options. This new 35mm version brings the series’ trademark speed and distinctive rendering to one of photography’s most versatile focal lengths.

With its fast f/1.2 maximum aperture, the lens produces an extremely shallow depth of field and strong subject separation, creating a cinematic look with smooth, velvety bokeh. When stopped down, it delivers greater depth of field while retaining impressive contrast and sharpness. A floating element helps maintain consistent image quality from close focus right through to infinity.

For the first time in a Noctilux lens, close focusing reaches 50cm when used with compatible live-view or electronic viewfinder systems. Rangefinder focusing is available down to 70cm. The optical design features ten elements in five groups, including three aspherical elements, and is optimised for high-resolution Leica M-series sensors.

Handcrafted in Wetzlar using Precision Glass Moulding technology, the lens measures just 5cm in length and weighs 416g. It includes an integrated hood and is priced at £7,700 / $9,650.
